Anti-terror group hails arrest of 'Ka Pipoy'

AN ANTI-TERROR group official on Tuesday hailed the arrest of New People's Army leader Manuel Ramao alias Eduardo Ramos and Ka Pipoy by the 73rd Infantry Battalion in Panabo City on September 16.

Ricardo E. Sardiña, chair of Southern Mindanao Alliance in Response to Terrorism (Smart), said the arrest of Ka Pipoy is favorable to the objective of Smart, which is to deter the ideologies introduced by the rebel forces.

"Tama lang din na arestuhin siya because he has string of criminal charges already. But he should still be entitled to due process," Sardiña added.

He said Smart is strengthening its anti-communist campaign in the barangay levels.

"Daghan na mi'g nasudlan nga mga rebel-infested areas. We are convincing the members of the communities not to believe in the ideologies introduced by the rebels. Pero, usahay pud lagi after sa meeting namo naay encounter mahitabo kay atakehon na pud sa mga rebelde," Sardiña said.

Members of the Smart, he said, are not armed although they have an alliance with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police.

Sardiña said they are now receiving financial support from various business firms, which he refused to name for security reasons. (AAG)
