Mindanao-RP bets depart for KK By Marianne L. Saberon
THE Mindanao-Philippines contingent departs for Kota Kinabalu at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday via Malaysian Airlines to compete in the 4th Bimp-Eaga Friendship Games on September 24 to 26.
The delegation, composed of Mindanao's finest selection of swimmers, tracksters and sepak takraw players, is expected to arrive in Kota Kinabalu at 5:15 p.m.
Davao City athletes and their fellow Mindanaoans, who had their last-minute training preparations at the Ultra sports complex on Tuesday, are all geared up for the battle ahead.
Davao, headed by delegation official City Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta, is seeing action in athletics, swimming and sepak takraw.
Davao's Bimp-Eaga Friendship Games 2003 triple gold medalist Roy Ocon, Clent Tatoy, siblings Hobert King and Nichelle Adovo, Edward Pascua, Janice Sinoy, Sharra Grace Tesaluna and Darelle Joie Sullano are competing in athletics while Corinna Denise Rosete, Carlo Rodriguez and cousin Julliani Rodriguez are entered in swimming.
The coaches are Emilio Lacanaria and Belen Kempis Taala for athletics and Brigido Rodriguez in swimming.
The city government of Davao spent over P459,000 to fund the trip of the city's athletes.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, through sports coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go, hosted a dinner for the Davao delegation last week.
City Hall OIC-Mayor Bonifacio Militar also sent off the Davao contingent Monday morning in behalf of Duterte.
Grendel Ilogon will reinforce the Tagum sepak takraw team Jowel Xavir Avelino, Lorenzo Sabejon and Elmer Quirante with coach Carmencita Gonzales.
Also competing for Mindanao-Philippines are Simon Tagaro of Panabo, Compostela Valley's Juvelyn Miranda and Sharon Ruleda of Davao del Sur (athletics) along with Iligan's Roy Navarro, Haroon Cali, Shahani Navarro, Nianh Lyn Acain and coach Gilda Rapliza, Bruce Timothy Perez and Teresa Simora of Koronadal, Albert Pondoc of Ozamis and Nikita Dacera of General Santos (swimming).
Philippine Sports Commissioner Leon Gonzalo "Binggoy" Montemayor heads the entire delegation while Manuelito Tacay is over-all delegation coordinator.
The other PSC officials are Epifanio Cordero Jr. (head secretariat), Manuel Ibay (disbursing officer), Lida Lacsamana (travel officer) and Victorio Sai (Mindanao coordinator).
Officials from local government units (LGUs) are Panabo City Mayor Rey Gavina, Iligan City councilor Vicente Belmonte Jr. and sports coordinator Frederick Siao and Davao del Sur's Hedy Deliva.
Personal coaches are Leopoldo Agusto Dacera of General Santos and Rose Rodriguez of Davao City.
