2 sued for extortion

* Accused were arrested while trying to extort money from trader while pretending to be members of the NPA

TWO men, one of them a minor, are facing charges of grave threats before the Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) for allegedly trying to extort P20,000 from a female trader in Calinan, Davao City early this month.

The two were accused of threatening to burn the businesswoman's delivery truck if she fails to pay the amount.

Prosecutor Shahruddin Roberto O. Sencio Jr. recommended the filing of charges against 31-year old Edwin Malladi and 16-year-old Erwin (surname withheld for being a minor), both residents of Baguio District, Davao City after finding probable cause that they may be guilty of the offense charged.

The complaint was lodged before the City Prosecutor's Office (CPO) by Jenly Cortes, owner of OJLC Parts and Hardware of Magsaysay Street in Calinan.

In an affidavit, Cortes said she was having breakfast in their house on September 11 when her uncle handed her a brown envelope.

She claimed the envelope contained a letter asking P20,000 from her as support for the New People's Army (NPA) signed by a certain "Ka Roger".

The letter further threatened to burn her delivery truck if she fails to pay the amount.

Cortes said she reported the incident to her brother, who immediately called the contact number indicated in the letter.

Cortes' brother allegedly negotiated with the letter senders and asked that the amount be reduced to half, or P10,000.

The respondents allegedly gave in and they agreed to meet at a certain place that same day.

Cortes added that they immediately contacted the police authorities that conducted an entrapment operation, which led to the arrest of the two suspects. (RCB)
