More call centers to be set up in Mindanao

MORE call centers are to be established in Davao City and other highly urbanized cities in Mindanao as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is encouraging companies to fan out across the country.

In an interview, DTI Regional Director Merly Cruz was optimistic about more call centers locating in Davao City, which she said has the right investment environment and the needed facilities.

"Apparently there will be some call centers coming in. Even the secretary (DTI Secretary Cesar Purisima) is saying that call centers should be dispersed in terms of location so they will not congest in Manila," she said.

With Davao already proven to be a good location, she said it is likely that more call centers will be coming in. She said Cagayan de Oro City is also being eyed as a call center location.

President Arroyo recently launched in Davao City the Mindanao's pioneering P60-million call center to be operated by G-Com Ltd. in November.

An affiliate of Cyber City Teleservices, Ltd. (CCTL), G-Com Ltd. will employ more than 1,000 call agents and support personnel to operate its call center with 400 cubicles to receive calls from all over the world.

An American company with offices in New Jersey and California in USA, CCTL is reportedly the largest customer related management (CRM) firm in the country, employing some 2,500 agents at its center in Clark Special Zone in Pampanga.

In an interview, part owner and G-Com Ltd senior executive vice president George Sorio said peace and order conditions led the company to Davao City.

Baguio and Cagayan de Oro cities were also considered in the company's search for a good location to expand CCTL's operations in the country.

Cruz said it was time to anticipate the requirements of call centers for business incentives and manpower.

She stressed the need for qualified people, proficient in English and capable of listening and thinking well.

Cruz said CCTL plans to network with support organizations including the academe to develop a pool of qualified call agents.
