More workers to be hired during Christmas season

MORE workers are expected to be hired during the Yuletide season.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional director Ma. Gloria Tango said it has been a trend among retail stores and malls to hire more workers during Christmas.

She said this is in anticipation of the release of workers' year-end benefits and bonuses.

Executive vice president Tick Hua Fernandez of the New City Commercial Center (NCCC) confirmed they would be hiring more workers before the year ends.

NCCC, which has more than 2,000 workers in all its outlets within the Davao region, employs workers from the community where the mall is located.

NCCC is also preparing for its grand opening as mall manager John Irene del Campo said more outlets are slated to be opened.

She said there will be more tenants, and more workers will also be hired.

NCCC is expected to open its other anchors by October, she said.

She said aside from the cinemas it will also set up a Discovery City for the children.

"There will also be more coffee shops to open at the ground floor and a Manila-based bookstore," she said.

Tango meanwhile said there are about 200,000 new entrants into the region's labor force.

She however reminded companies that workers employed on contract basis are entitled to benefits required by law.

She said DOLE conducts regional inspections to see to it that companies follow the labor standards including the benefits due to the workers.
