Igacos strives to be a 'city of character'
By Raquel C. Bagnol

IN ORDER to create an atmosphere of character-based city, the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) is set to launch its "Cities of Character" program next week.

"We want to promote Igacos to the world as a city of character, to create a distinctive character identifiable to residents of Igacos," Igacos information officer Noel Daquiaog in a telephone interview said.

"Mini-launching lang muna sa September 28 with the local government units, but we moved the grand launching sometime in October for every barangay and all national agencies to be able to participate," he said.

Daquiaog also said that the adaptation of the "cities of character" will be carried out in schools, establishments and other institutions as a coalition between private partners and non-government organizations.

He said that they patterned the cities of character program after Tagaytay City.

"Ang sa Tagaytay, na-sustain gyod nila ang ilang mga programs dili parihas sa uban nga 'ningas cogon' (Tagaytay has sustained its programs. Other cities were only good at the beginning)," Daquiaog said.

"In order for the program to be sustainable, we will eventually push for its legislation," he said, adding that it would mean before one can acquire a business permit, a marriage license or any other document, he or she has to undergo a two-day training.

He said the city government of Igacos has allotted P50,000 for the program this year, but they are hoping to increase the amount next year.

He said that dissemination of information and awareness is the first step they have to work on to achieve their goal.
