Dacera bags gold in BIMP-Eaga games By Marianne L. Saberon
GENERAL Santos City tanker Nikita Dacera bagged the first gold medal for Mindanao-Philippines in swimming as two Davao City bets got one silver and a bronze in the 4th BIMP-Eaga Friendship Games in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.
The Mindanao-Philippines' swimming team hauled a total of one gold, one silver and two bronzes as of Friday presstime.
Dacera, 13, clocked 17 minutes and 39:07 seconds to bag the girls' 1,500 freestyle gold over a Sulawesi swimmer who timed 17:59:65 for silver and a Sarawak tanker who settled for bronze with 18:49:58.
Davao's Carlo Rodriguez, a 2003 BIMP Eaga Games triple gold medalist, pocketed the silver in boys' 100-meter freestyle event while fellow Dabawenyo but Manila-based Corinna Denise Rosete added a bronze.
Iligan City bet Haroon Cali, 17, also clinched the bronze in boys' 200m individual medley (IM).
Boys' swimming coach Brigido "Jun" Rodriguez earlier predicted his son Carlo to harvest eight golds including relay events.
But since each swimmer is allowed to compete in five individual and three relay events, Carlo may no longer achieve the expectation of his father.
Hopes are still high for defending champion Mindanao-Philippines as more gold medal events were being played in swimming and athletics as presstime.
Davao's Bimp-Eaga Friendship Games 2003 bemedaled athlete Roy Ocon, Clent Tatoy, siblings Hobert King and Nichelle Adovo, Edward Pascua, Janice Sinoy, Sharra Grace Tesaluna and Darelle Joie Sullano will hunt for the gold in athletics while tanker Julliani Rodriguez will try to make waves in her debut in the Games.
The Davao City government funded the trip of its athletes and coaches to the Games.
Mindanao-Philippines is also bannered by athletes from Panabo, Davao del Sur, Koronadal, Tagum, Ozamis and Compostela Valley.
