Soldier claiming to be death squad member faces dismissal

THE Philippine Army is now preparing the filing of administrative charges against the soldier arrested by the police for allegedly extorting money from a lawyer whom they claimed has a son involved in the illegal drugs trade.

Task Force Davao chief Col. Eduardo del Rosario said he was instructed by 404th In fantry Brigade commander Brig. Gen. Rodolfo Obaniana to prepare all necessary documents for PFC Arnel Macas' discharge from duty.

Del Rosario said they are now awaiting a copy of the charge sheet against Macas from the Philippine National Police.

Del Rosario assured they would not condone Macas' actions and will not, in anyway, interfere with the investigation nor will they take Macas into military custody.

Macas and one Emilio Dexter Centillas identified themselves as members of the shadowy anti-drug vigilante group Davao Death Squad and demanded an amount of P30,000 for the safety of the lawyer's son whom they claimed has been included in their drug watchlist.

The two were arrested in an entrapment operation conducted by a special operations group organized by the Intelligence Division of the Davao City Police Office, headed by Sr. Insp. Emilio Vilela at around 5 p.m. Tuesday in front of MacDonald's in Bajada.

The suspects reportedly threatened the lawyer that they will kill his son if he will not give in to their demand.

It was not reported whether the lawyer's son is really involved in illegal drugs activities.

Recovered from the possession of Macas were unlicensed .45 (Colt) pistol with serial number 591427, a magazine containing 6 live ammunition, a cellular phone, cash amounting to P800, identification card and the marked money.

Also recovered from Centillas was his wallet containing an identification card of the Philippine National Police bearing the name Richard Centillas. (BOT)
