New chess game out
By Marianne L. Saberon

* 'Coalition Chess' invented by a Davao City architect

THE newly invented `Coalition Chess,' a brainchild of Davao City architect Gene Nagayo, will soon hit chess buffs and will be officially launched at the Gaisano Mall of Davao on Oct. 14.

The new game will have four players playing in one Coalition chessboard at the same time.

"I started to conceptualize the game in 1995 and I am happy that at last, I perfected it. Mr. James Infiesto helped me out to iron out the rules of the game," Nagayo said.

Nagayo said he was inspired to create the game in one of his visits at the Osmeña Park in 1994 where players would usually fight over a limited number of chessboards.

"I also observed that chess is a very serious game so I decided to make a game that will be fun and everybody will be confident to play each other despite what ELO or NCFP ratings they have," Nagayo told awe-struck members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) during their weekly sports forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

Infiesto said the game allows a player to have a coalition with another player.

"The playing partners will be positioned opposite each other. The coalition of players may help each other out with strategies to defeat their rivals," Infiesto explained.

"They can also communicate with each other through signs while the game is ongoing. A timeout is also allowed," he added.

Infiesto added they have tried the game among top-rated chessers likes Jimmy Dano, National Master Prospero "Bebot" Cruz, Reynaldo Quiñonez, Sammy Yu and National Chess Federation of the Philippines regional director Ronnie Tabudlong, among others.

"We also conducted a tournament at the Osmeña Park. The players really enjoyed the game," Infiesto said.

Nagayo said he plans to tap the services of people at the Davao Penal Colony (Dapecol) for the mass manufacturing of the boards and pieces and the differently-abled persons for the painting of the materials.

"I would like them to be involved in this and help them in the process as well in terms of livelihood," Nagayo said.
