Veggie growers launch search for best gardens

TO SHOWCASE the relevance of vegetable garden as an alternative source of readily available and affordable nutritious food and to generate income for the barangay, a group of vegetable growers in Southern Mindanao is currently campaigning for the Gulayan sa Barangay (GSB) project.

The Vegetable Industry Council of Southern Mindanao, Inc. (Vicsmin) also urged city barangays to join in a competition they will organize for the region's best vegetable gardens.

Vicsmin said there are 73 barangays all over Davao City, which have given their commitment to pursue the project.

To further encourage active participation, Vicsmin has decided to organize a competition among participating barangays.

The group has already set the mechanics, as guiding principles for the barangays, to wit: the minimum area of each GSB is 150 square meters and the maximum is 300 square meters; there should be at least five kinds of vegetables planted; the barangay should have records of activity regarding the GSB operation; GSB entry must be self-reliant; GSB must be a community activity, thus, everybody in the barangay must cooperate; with standing crops during the evaluation; participating barangay will start at zero-based on September 2004; and judging will be done quarterly.

Certain criteria have been drafted also, among these are: vegetable, with a percentage weight of 70 percent; amenities with 10 percent; ornamentals with 10 percent; and aesthetic value also with 10 percent.

The activity started in September and will end on August next year.

Among the proponents of the activity are Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Unit 11 (DA-RFU 11), Davao City Council, City Agriculturist's Office, and Growth with Equity in Mindanao 2 (GEM 2) program. (JMM)
