Tabak bowlers rule Lapanday tourney
TABAK not only came from behind to win the championship.
It dominated the 10th Lapanday Tri-Media bowling tournament Saturday at the Mega Dover Lanes.
Getting better each game, Tabak finished the four-game event with 2,558 pinfalls to emerge on top again in the annual tournament organized for the local press.
The Tabak bowlers capped their terrific campaign with a stunning 695 pinfalls in the final game that had the rest of the competitors shaking their heads in desbelief. The team fired earlier games of 602-628-633.
And, as if the victory wasn't enough, Tabak also snatched the individual titles as Davao City Councilo Nilo Abellera and Rhea Villanueva came away with the men's and women's singles titles, respectively.
Abellara, station manager of DXRA, fired the day's best of 137, while Villanueva of Sun.Star Davao stamped her class in the women's division with 114.
It was the third title for Tabak in the Lapanday bowlfest making it the winningest team in 10 years.
"Despite losing the services of our players who are now with other teams, we were able to make it through," said Ram Maxey, Tabak team captain.
The Guilders likewise authored a marvelous adventure of its own, coming from 11th place after the first round to steal second place at 2,526.
The Office of the Press Secretary-Phil. Information Agency, which took the initial lead, finished third with 2,526 while the AFP/PNP Defense Press Corps came in fourth at 2,510.
The Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) made a respectable finish at fifth place with its 2,492 total.
"After three years of absence in the Lapanday bowling tournament, we are very happy to come up with a respectable finish," said DSA vice president Jon Develos.
LFC sports coordinator Allan Araneta awarded the prizes to the winners.
Final results: Champion - Tabak, 2558 pinfalls; 2nd - Guilders, 2526 pinfalls; 3rd - OPS-PIA, 2526; 4th - AFP/PNP Defense Press Corps, 2510; 5th - Davao Sportswriters Association, 2492; 6th - Men In Focus, 2438; 7th - Scoop, 2350; 8th- Mindacomnet, 2342; 9th - Mecspol, 2324; 10th- KBP, 2314; 11th- DUBI, 2300; 12th - Lensmen, 2230; 13th - Minsupala, 2159; 14th - Davao Press Club, 2128.
