Davao airport is Mindanao's busiest
THE Davao International Airport had the most number of air passengers among Mindanao's airports during the first semester of this year.
Giovanni Velez, senior economic development specialist (Seds) of the Mindanao Economic and Development Council (Medco), reported over radio program "Hataw
Mindanao" of DXRP Radyo ng Bayan Thursday that the airport accounted for 45 percent of the total air services for the period.
He said it served 582,775 passengers for the first six months this year.
Velez and Seds Annalyn Binancilan both explained Mindanao's accomplishments in terms of the island's sectoral performance as its contribution to the 15th year National Statistics Month celebration.
Velez said the total number of passengers coming in and out of Mindanao airports significantly increased by 28.56 percent from 1.02 million of the same period last year to 1.31 million.
He attributed the increase in traffic to various activities in the different parts of Mindanao.
Meanwhile, he said the volume of cargoes passing through Mindanao airports showed a five-percent increase during the period.
He said 45 percent of these cargoes were incoming while 55 percent were shipped out of Mindanao.
He said airports in Mindanao served a total of 18,257 flights, posting a 15.5 percent increase for the period in review.
Of total flights made, 49 percent were incoming while 51 percent were outgoing.
Binancilan on the other hand pointed out that total visitor arrivals in Mindanao for the first semester increased by 10.7 percent compared to last year.
In terms of regional distribution, Region X got the biggest share of about 27.66 percent in terms of visitor arrivals as tourists were attracted to the region's newest attractions, the skim boarding and river rafting in Cagayan de Oro City.
The Panaad Festival in Camiguin also lured both domestic and international tourists to visit the area, she said.
She said the US accounted for 20 percent of the island's foreign visitors; Japan, 19 percent; and Korea, eight percent.
