GenSan jobs fair lures global firms

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- Hewitt-Packard, e-Telecare Corp., Ark Data Communication Corp., Association of Software Developers of Davao Groups, Information and Communication Technology Group Corp., and Trend Micro-Corp. have confirmed their attendance to the ICT Jobs Fair on October 29-30 here.

The companies are looking for graduates of IT-related courses, communications, liberal arts, business/commerce degrees, engineering, and science courses.

The Jobs Fair will offer not less than 500 vacancies in call centers, business process outsourcing (BPO), software development and programming, medical transcriptions, and animation as projected by the Department of Trade and Industry.

In an informal jobs fair facilitated by DTI in June of this year, one information technology company offered as many as 1,300 job openings.

Call centers such as e-Telecare Corp., Association of Software Developers of Davao Groups composed of 11 ICT-outlet members, and ICT Group Corp., place English proficiency on top of their requirements to applicants.

DTI Senior trade industry development specialist Leonard Flores said, "A call center agent can earn a minimum of P8,000 and a maximum P18,000-P20,000, even on entry level."

Currently in the Philippines, there are 30,000 call center agents or 68 call centers that contributed $400-480 million to the Philippine economy in the 1st quarter of the year.
