Roxas to fund repair of city public markets
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza

SENATOR Manuel Roxas has vowed to set aside an ample amount from his pork barrel for the development of public markets in Davao City.

Department of Trade and Industry-Davao City Field Office (DTI-DCFO) director Teolulo Pasawa said in an interview last Tuesday that the senator, known as Mr. Palengke, has assured to give part of his pork barrel for the rehabilitation of the city's public market.

Pasawa said they are presently planning some strategies to be taken in line with the implementation of the project tagged as "Palengkenomics", aimed at improving the facilities of public markets in the city, as well as giving the public market vendors some financial assistance.

"Isa sa main focus ng program is to provide financial assistance to our vendors in order to avoid 5-6. Sa nakikita kasi namin ngayon, marami sa mga vendors natin ang lubog sa utang dahil sa 5-6 na 'yan," he said.

Pasawa said the possible major effect of providing the vendors with financial assistance is the lowering of prices of goods sold in the market.

"Kasi hindi na sila mangungutang, di na rin ganoon kalaki ang itutubo nila sa kanilang mga paninda.

Ngayon kasi, mahal ang paninda kasi malaki ang interest ng perang inutang nila," he said.

Pasawa said they are just waiting for the funding support from Roxas, in order to formally start the project.
