4-day workweek bane to manufacturing sector
By Raquel C. Bagnol

THE four-day workweek proposal of Councilor Diosdado Mahipos could present some difficulties especially for the manufacturing sector, according to Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCII) president Sofronio Jucutan.

"This ordinance would be alright for offices but for those in the manufacturing sector that has three shifts of work schedule, this could be difficult as the volume of production may be affected," Jucutan said.

Jucutan said a four-day workweek for manufacturers and other similar industries may result to the reduction of the volume of production and eventually the loss of regular clients if the company will no longer be able to supply the orders.

"This could greatly affect the basic services being offered by the companies to their clients but arrangements however be made," Jucutan said.

In the proposed ordinance, employees are given an option to choose between Monday and Friday as their additional day-off during weekdays as long as half of the total work force in a particular department will remain in their offices while others are on day off.

Earlier, Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan said the employees could use the additional day off to look for alternative means of livelihood to augment their salaries.

"What is important is for the employees to be able to render a total of 40 hours work in a week based on the requirements of the Civil Service Commission," Bonguyan said.
