Gambler killed vigilante-style
By Joy G. Romares

AN ALLEGED gambler was shot to death by two of three unidentified motorcycle-riding men on Lakandula Street in Agdao, Davao City, Thursday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Marnelito Marbel, 34, single, self-employed, resident of Lakandula Street, R.Castillo, Agdao, this city.

Investigation conducted by Senior Police Officer 4 Eleazar Gador of the
Sta. Ana Police precinct showed Marbel was walking his way home from a billiard game at around 5:15 p.m. when he was waylaid by the suspects.

Two of the men alighted from the vehicle and shot Marbel on the thigh.

Though wounded, Marbel was able to run, but the suspects gave a chase. Marbel managed to enter the open gate of a certain Daniel Basinillo, where he was cornered and finished off with several gunshots.

The suspects then boarded the motorcycle and sped off towards Jerome Extension.

The Scene of the Crime Operation (Soco) team declared Marbel dead on the spot with gunshot wounds in different parts of his body.

According to Marbel's father Oning and barangay chief Nilo Lacida, Marbel was not in any way involved in illegal activities in their barangay.

Neighbors of the victim also claimed that Marbel's only vice is gambling as the latter was allegedly often seen in cockpit areas.

Oning said his son survived a stabbing incident in December last year.

Oning added his son had a case of physical injury in court for defending his sibling from an attacker armed with an "indian pana."

"Naa siyay nasagpaan kay nasakpan niya na tirahon unta iyang manghod og pana (He slapped a man because he caught him trying to hit his brother with indian pana)," Oning said.

Police have yet to ascertain the motive of the victim's killing. The Sta.Ana police station is conducting further investigation.

Marbel's death came after the killing of Francisco Otero, an alleged serial rapist, who was found dead at Shrine Hills in Matina on October 6.

Marbel is the 74th victim killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen since January this year.
