Salary hike would result in retrenchment: biz leader
By Raquel C. Bagnol

DAVAO City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) president Sofronio Jucutan said Friday increasing the wages of laborers could result to a difficulty in sustaining business as production costs have also increased.

He also said implementation of another wage increase would result to retrenchment of workers.

"The DCCCII has submitted a request to the tripartite wage board that if possible, we have to defer the increase in wages of laborers because the businessmen would bear the brunt and this could result to the laying off of workers," Jucutan said in Friday's 'On the Spot' forum at RPN-9.

Jucutan said that their request for a deferment of wage increase is due to the increased cost and input of production.

Jucutan also urged the working class to get involved in belt-tightening measures to support the country's implementation of austerity measures.

"Let us increase productivity because that would mean more sales, and more sales mean more income. That's the proper time that a wage increase could be discussed," Jucutan said.

Meanwhile, Jucutan also said there is no need to increase taxes to be able to generate more revenues.

"Proper tax collection and not an increase in tax rates is what the country needs," Jucutan said. He said the government needed to go after the big corporations that are not paying proper taxes instead of increasing the tax rates for the ordinary citizens.
