Cotabato okays P1.5M rubber nursery project
THE North Cotabato Provincial Development Council executive committee approved yesterday the release of P1.5 million for a five-hectare rubber nursery in Barangay Pag-asa, M'lang.
The move is in line with efforts to boost the local rubber industry, a priority of North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol during his last term.
The nursery will develop 500,000 seedlings as planting materials for an initial 50 hectares in key rubber areas of the province.
These materials will be made available to interested farmers through an agricultural financing scheme of the provincial government in partnership with Land Bank of the Philippines.
Piñol is banking on a revitalized rubber industry to the lives of farmers in the province.
"Natural rubber is still in high demand in emerging markets such as China, and investing in the revitalization of rubber farms in the province could bring positive results for our constituents," the governor said.
North Cotabato is the country's largest producer of raw and semi-processed rubber.
Aside from rubber, Piñol has identified coconut and oil palm as the other priority agricultural products to be promoted by the provincial government.
It recently launched a coconut-planting program together with the Philippine Coconut Authority involving an initial 80 thousand coconut seedlings.
