Proud to be loud and clear
By Jasper P. Huang
HighSpeed

IN THIS quiet and peaceful neighborhood of Davao, little do they know that a vehicle known as the Pakrat exists...until they hear it coming about three blocks away. Cloaked in black, the Pakrat seems so harmless, until the "start" button of its sound system is activated.

Packed with 16 subwoofers (tuned @ 33Hz and crossed-over @120Hz) and 40 full-range speakers, this PUJ, redefined as Public Utility Jukebox, could blast you sky high with its clean, suave bass and clear, detailed mid/highs that's emanating in free space. The bass drivers are composed of 12 12" Thunder Audio models, 2 15" Kicker CompVRs and 2 15" RockfordFosgate Punch subwoofers. The mid/high combo came from the factory of Thunder Audio along with the wirings and cables. The Alpine CDA-7949E head unit coupled to an Alpine 12-disc changer send signals to the AudioControl EQX equalizer, which was tuned using a Real-Time Analyzer and Oscilloscope by SubwFour Car Concepts and Options' master installer, Victor "Yo" Tan.

Powering the whole system are 9 Thunder Audio amplifiers whose juice are fed by 5 deep-cycle batteries (2 Interstates and 3 Exide Orbitals), 1 1.5Farad Tsunami Capacitor and 2 115-amp alternators. Owner Irene Matute-Abadilla is proud of her Pakrat, which never ceases to amaze people with its loud and concert-quality sound. When the Pakrat demonstrates its sound ability, the basslines literally "crawl" off the asphalt with the vocals and other instruments traveling with it.

The result is that everybody gets a free concert when her husband Cocoi drives the vehicle around town. When you hear it coming, you'll know it's the Pakrat because not only will you hear its thunderous bass, you'll also hear the people running and shouting "Ania na ang Pakrat bai!!" as they flank the sidewalks ready to give a 21-gun salute to Davao's loudest and cleanest sounding Public Utility Jukebox.

It's loud, it's clear, it's black, it's the Pakrat!
