Unstable peace and order behind all other woes
By Raquel C. Bagnol

UNSTABLE peace and order situation causes the string of problems in Muslim-dominated provinces comprising the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

Alexander Tomawis, mayor of Barira town in Maguindanao, said this in an interview Wednesday.

"We can't deny that the shaky peace and order situation of Muslim communities contribute to a lot of other problems," Tomawis, who is also the public information officer of the newly formed Muslim League of Cities, Municipalities and Communities of the Philippines (MLCMCP) said.

Tomawis said there is a need to look into what the problem really is and see what can be done as it would cause a cascading effect in all other areas that needs development.

"Hindi natin made-deny na kapag hindi stable ang peace and order situation sa isang lugar, it is often buried in poverty and because of poverty, there is illiteracy dahil hindi na rin makapag-aral ang mga tao," Tomawis said.

Tomawis was among the 80 other mayors from different towns in Armm, Lanao del Norte, Palawan and Zamboanga Peninsula who attended the 2nd general assembly of the MLCMCP at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Wednesday.

Tomawis said the MLCMCP two-day workshop aims to strengthen the bond between local chief executives from Muslim-populated cities and municipalities towards achieving a common goal, that is to attain peace and development.

"This is a historic occasion for us Muslim mayors as our collective voices can now be heard by the National Government as well as the multi-donor community," said Marawi City Mayor Omar Solitario Ali, also the MLCMCP president.
