Metro Wear
By Jinggoy Salvador

FASHION forecast for next year's look has been laid out. Recently, fashion and lifestyle glossy Metro Magazine handpicked 18 of the country's leading couturiers to interpret summer metropolitan dressing for the coming new year. This is the second staging of a fashion spectacle for this magazine. And this collection was amazing and bursting with color and creativity.

Studio 10 of the ABS-CBN complex was the site of the gathering of the stylists (participating and guests) and Manila's fashionistas donning their favorite designer clothes. It was the same in any other assembly where you here the most asked question "Who are you wearing tonight?" Smiles appear and the lips utter the designer's name (trying to be modest) and bulbs start flashing as they gladly pose for the camera.

A huge crowd came in to witness the unveiling of the sneak pereview of Rhett Eala, Anthony Nocom, Vittorio, Ceasar Gaupo, Tippi Ocampo, Patrice Ramos Diaz, Oj Hofer, Lulu Tan Gan, Jesus Lloren, Arcy Gayatin, Rajo Laurel, Randy Ortiz, Dennis Lustico, veterans Mike dela Rosa, and Efren Ocampo and the legendary Ernest Santiago.

Ernest Santiago was the bad boy of fashion during his heydays. He's into furniture designing nowadays and I was surprised to see him in this show. Talking to Ernest prior to the show, I asked him what I should expect from the designers. "Expect a lot of colors, the designs are good although no cutting edge or avant garde (which he is very known for in his younger years). Even I have to tone down my designs. It's all about commercialism."

Vittorio opened the show with looks inspired by his recent travels to India, Turkey, Spain and Holland. Excluding "happiness" in his collection, the designer created wearable separates for men and women in a splash of colors. While Vittorio mixed his colors, Rhett Eala used his colors separately.

Using the color pink as his unifying theme, Rajo Laurel created an impact. His collection using crushed taffeta and organza was very sweet and wearable, very friendly to his clientele indeed.

Femininity ruled in Patrice Ramos Diaz' and Arcy Gayatin's collection. The chiffon, satin, organdy, stretched tulle and lace were the fabric of choice creating a look of rich and luxury but in very young and contemporary designs.

Knit queen Lulu Tan Gan came up with candy-colored knits with designs inspired by the bamboo and bandana. Hong Kong based Cesar Gaupo came up with chic printed billowy creations but Ernest didn't quite make a stir with his diaphanous baby doll dresses.

However, if we delve into construction of clothes, Oj Hofer is making a name for himself in creating dresses with single seam. But when the name Jesus Lloren comes up, expect something fabulous. He opted to use jewel colored Thai silk in his collection, the solid colors hugged the models' bodies and somehow emphasized the creative detailing of the construction. Into the same formula is Dennis Lustico. His all-white collection reminded me of the 70's when Halston was the designer of the moment and Jacklyn Smith was the muse.

Sleeveless jumpsuits and peek-a-boo dresses using metal rings were very retro-inspired. The second Metrowear, according to Thelma Sioson of the ASBS-CBN publishing group, was a feat to mount.

After the first show, they swore never to do it again having a difficult time to gather the country's big names in fashion in one show. But "we never learn our lesson" and so they did another. With the success of this gathering, expect a third in the coming year.

Of Apples & Lemons

MAMUMULA ang Blue Knights. December 30 is the date for all Ateneans to make their way to Venue for the annual homecoming. Batch 79 will be hosting this years gathering. Still unknown to a lot of Ateneans, ALL batches are invited but not the ones in Grade School of course, you're not allowed to drink alcohol yet.

Looks like a pretty exciting party for us this yearend. Apples for everyone joining the festivity! La Vida Loca Follow-up. It seems that my troubled fan read my column last week and took my advice. She said she did apologize and so far hasn't gotten any response from her friend. These things take time honey, all we can do is be patient, it's the Christmas season...the season might softened your friend's heart and get what you wish for Christmas your friend!

An apple for you for accepting your mistake and apologizing but keep chewing on that lemon I gave you last week... Do it until you are forgiven.

The Velvet Tour. Velvet Mafia Cocoy Puyat, Peligro and Bed's resident DJ is into his fourth month of guesting at Liquid this December 17th. If you're into house music, then his music will turn you on. It can be orgasmic, that I can assure you! Friday, December 17, be at Liquid.
