Manny to watch Gabi fight
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

Davao pug faces tough Indon foe on Dec. 19

THE promising Diosdado "Prince" Gabi will climb the ring on Dec. 19 to fight a tough Indonesian foe here in Davao City, with no less than People's Champion Manny Pacquiao coming over to cheer the Davao-born fighter.

Soc Piñol, Gabi's manager, announced on Sunday that Pacquiao promised to be at ringside to give moral support to his boxer.

The flyweight bout organized by North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol is a dinner-boxing show set at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, the first of its kind to be held in Davao.

Gabi, a native of Lasang, Davao City but is now fighting out of North Cotabato, squares off with Jimmy Pinontoan in a 10-round bout.

The bout promises to be an exciting one as both pugs are out to prove something and to show to all and sundry who is the better fighter.

When Gabi and Pinontoan first met two years ago, the bout ended in a draw.

Gabi, who was trained briefly by Freddie Roach when the noted American trainer came recently, eyes to score a victory to boost his record.

The 25-year-old Gabi won his last fight against a Thai opponent in a bout held in Antipas, North Cotabato.

Gabi was earlier scheduled to fight World Boxing Council flyweight champ Pongsaklek Wongjongkam last September but the latter backed out at the last minute.

"He's a good fighter. I hope to train him in my gym," Roach said of Gabi in an earlier interview.

Pacquiao is fresh from a fourth-round stoppage of Thai Fahsan 3K Battery Saturday night at The Fort in Taguig.

Pacquiao finished off Fahsan with a thundering left uppercut that drew a roar of approval from thousands of fans at ringside.

The General Santos City native is scheduled to meet WBA and IBF featherweight titlist Juan Manuel Marquez in a rematch in February.
