Mayor urges rebels to stop bloodshed
By Raquel C. Bagnol

CITY Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte urged Sunday rebel groups to end their quest for their ideals through bloodshed.

"No good has come out of the years and years of fighting between the New People's Army (NPA) and the military troops, let us strive to have peace without bloodshed," Duterte said.

He added that fighting is a waste of time and there's no redeeming value in it.

"I know everyone is tired of fighting. Soldiers do not relish killing their fellowmen and they pull the trigger of their guns with heavy hearts," Duterte added.

Duterte said that it is high time to talk of peace with the New People's Army with sincerity so everyone can live in a peaceful Mindanao.

Sunday marked the 36th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

In earlier reports from this paper, the CPP Central Committee said they have ordered their armed wing, the NPA to go on a 10-day ceasefire nationwide.

"The Christmas ceasefire which takes effect from midnight of December 23 until midnight of January 2, 2005 was made in unity with the Filipino people's traditional celebration of Christmas and the New Year and to pave the way for the celebration of the CPP's 36th founding anniversary," the statement read.

Unlike the CPP-NPA members who got a respite and put away their guns to celebrate Christmas with their families during the 10-day unilateral ceasefire, the military and government troops had to work full time during the holiday season.
