Councilor mulls meningococcemia primer By Aurea A. Gerundio
DAVAO City Councilor Nilo G. Abellera bared a plan to produce a primer on meningococcemia, a bacterial disease, to be disseminated to the public to stem unnecessary panic.
Abellera, who chairs the committee on health, advised the public not to panic about meningococcemia as this can be cured if treated early.
Abellera said that meningococcemia might not result to death if the patient, at the early onset of fever, will be treated immediately with an antibiotic.
"I have communicated with the City Health Office and DOH (Department of Health) 11 personnel regarding the matter. I called their attention to coordinate to prevent increase of similar case here in Davao City," Abellera said.
Based on the report from the DOH 11, Abellera said, three persons already died of meningococcemia in this city since last year.
"The first case was not actually from Davao City. The patient was from Cotabato pero dito siya nagkaroon ng meningococcemia. She was admitted at the Davao Doctors Hospital in November. The second case was that of the three-month-old baby from Matina Pangi in November. The third case is this child from Marilog na namatay this week lang," Abellera said.
"We are planning to conduct information dissemination on meninggoceccemia just like what we did when there was this alarm on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome," Abellera said.
