False tsunami warning sends residents fleeing By Aurea A. Gerundio
CLOSE to a thousand residents fled their homes and sought refuge at the covered court of Mini-forest Barangay 23-C after word spread that an earthquake will strike at midnight and will generate a tsunami.
Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) president and Barangay 23-C chairman Amilbangsa T. Manding told reporters that he was surprised to see residents with their belongings starting to flock at the covered court at around 10 p.m. Monday.
"Tinanong ko nga sila kung bakit nag-evacuate sila sa covered court. Karamihan ng nag-evacuate ay 'yung sa coastal area talaga nakatira. Dala-dala pa ang gamit nila. Ang sabi sa akin, somebody informed them in the afternoon na may mangyayaring lindol at around 12 midnight," Manding said.
Manding said that the person even used the name of City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte to make his warning credible.
He, however, believes that this misinformation could be a "modus operandi" of robbers.
Meanwhile, a resident of the same place said that they even prepared candles because they were also informed that there will be a power outage.
Manding said that he will be meeting with his purok leaders to map out plans to avoid similar disinformation in the future.
