No Davao regional athletic meet this year? By Marianne L. Saberon
THE Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) might resort to a selection process to form its delegation should the 2005 Palarong Pambansa pushes through in May.
Davao City-based Department of Education (DepEd) sports official Jimmy Cerrojales revealed this to Sun.Star Davao in an interview recently.
"If we could not hold a regional meet due to financial constraints, we might as well have a selection. We will base the selection on our recent Davraa and Palaro records," Cerrojales said.
He said the schools division superintendents in the Davao region are not that keen on holding a regional eliminations since DepEd is still in a wait-and-see situation with the Philippine Sports Commission.
"We are still waiting for the go-signal if there will be a Palaro this year. We could not make any move without confirmation from PSC," Cerrojales said.
Cerrojales, however, heard the Palaro is set on May 2 to 8 somewhere in the National Capital Region.
"I've heard it will be hosted by NCR but in what particular city, we still don't know," Cerrojales said.
He said the division superintendents will still meet to discuss the matter.
Davraa emerged over-all champion in the elementary and secondary divisions of the 2003 edition of the Palaro held in Tubod, Lanao del Norte sans key NCR and other Luzon delegations.
But Davraa could not be so sure of keeping the titles if the Palaro will be played in NCR.
Meanwhile, Manila is bidding to host the Palaro, reportedly, with or without funding from the National Government. For Bisaya stories from Davao. Click here.
