Cashier of padlocked video center charged

THE City Prosecutor's Office (CPO) has approved the filing of charges against the cashier of a video center accused of engaging in the illegal business of renting out pornographic video CDs and tapes.

Charged for violation of Article 201 paragraph 2 of the Revised Penal Code, also known as the immoral doctrines, obscene publication and exhibitions and indecent shows, is Joan Gaye Manez, cashier of Shuri Video Haus at Sta. Ana Avenue, Davao City.

The charges against Aissan John Tamayo, owner of the establishment, are yet to be resolved before the CPO.

Assistant city prosecutor Samuel Atencia penned a resolution based on the joint affidavit filed by Senior Inspector Niegeros Ragay and Senior Police Officer 1 Edward Ramirez, chief and investigator respectively of the Women's and Children's Concerns Section (WCCS) of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO).

Atencia recommended a bail bond of P24,000 for the temporary liberty of Manez and directed Tamayo to file his counter-affidavit to the charges.

The charges stemmed from the raid conducted by a joint team of the business bureau and members of the DCPO and WCCS.

The raiding team seized an undetermined number of x-rated VCDs and VHS tapes from the video center.

Bureau chief Erwin Alparaque said the establishment has been granted a business permit to operate a video rental only.

Initial investigation by the police showed that the video shop has nine closed cubicles on the second floor where couples can view obscene films and do other things as they please.

The customers are reportedly charged P70 per viewing inside an air-conditioned room, which can be locked from inside.

Alparaque said that, as a result of their operation at the video shop, Tamayo will no longer be issued a permit by the bureau for any business. (RCB)
