Hospitals monitored for wounded rebels

POLICE authorities in Compostela Valley are closely monitoring all hospitals in the province after Saturday's armed encounter between the rebels and the Army there.

In a radio report, Senior Superintendent Paul Mendez reportedly ordered his men to monitor all hospitals in the province after reports that several New People's Army rebels were wounded in the clash between the Front Committee 20 and the Army's 36th Infantry Battalion on Sitio Putting Bato, Barangay Ngan in Compostela last February 5.

The military claimed that at least 14 rebels were killed while several others were wounded in the said clash. Two soldiers also died while five were wounded.

The Army unit under the 36th Infantry Battalion encountered the rebels under the Front Committee 20 led by Kumander Lalay around ten in the morning Saturday.

The rebels numbered around 100 when they clashed with two platoons from the government troopers led by 2 Lieutenant Edmund Lanzar.

The dead soldiers were identified as Sargeant Candelario Canton and Private Ronilo Demetria.

Wounded were Sargeant Rudy Abelo, Private First Class Bobby Ytang, Private First Class Ricardo Gamayot, Private First Class Jerry Patacsil and Private First Class Richard Ebcas.

Bagasin said the wounded soldiers were already evacuated from the encounter site and had been declared out of danger.

He said air support was unable to penetrate the area last Saturday due to heavy clouds. Ground pursuit operation was still ongoing as of Tuesday. (BOT)
