Davao excluded from tourism dep't ad; players irked
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) advertisement, which highlighted the Philippines' major destinations aired over the country's TV stations, was just a teaser of the real full-length campaign.

This was according to DOT 11 assistant regional director Roger Layson, after a number of stakeholders in the tourism industry reacted to the ad.

The ad, shown on TV on February 13, featured some of the big tourist destinations in Luzon and Visayas, excluding Mindanao.

Supposedly, the ad should run for 30 seconds but the one shown was only for 15 seconds.

This alarmed Mindanao-based tourism sector since, according to them, this act would somehow reflect that the national government lacks efforts to promote Mindanao as a tourism zone.

"We're a little mad that Davao City was not included. We wished Davao City was shown as a convention city," Aileen Llanes-Gacon, sales manager of Apo View Hotel said during the Club 888 forum Wednesday.

But Layson said in a phone interview Thursday that the time allotted for Mindanao-region is even longer than that of Luzon and Visayas since the whole remaining 15 seconds would only discuss about Mindanao.

To date, the agency has not received any communication yet as to when the next half of the ad would be aired.

The campaign is a joint project of DOT and Smart Communications.
