Toastmasters developing excellent public speakers
"Members are not only good in speaking, they are also experts in evaluating speeches and speakers, because they do that to each other every meeting."
IF YOU'RE looking for an organization, which will help you develop your communication and leadership skills and have fun at the same time, you'll find it in Toastmasters International. TMI, a non-profit group, is doing wonders to some 180,000 members (at last count) in 54 countries in terms of making them very effective speakers, people who usually get ahead in whatever path they have chosen in life because of their ability to articulate an sell their ideas.
Dabawenyos are lucky that their city is host to nine TMI clubs (chapters) now under the leadership of District E Governor Adeline Solomon. District E also has jurisdiction over four other TMI chapters in Maguindanao, Zamboanga and South Cotabato.
In TMI, the training in communication skills, especially public speaking, is a never-ending task. No wonder Davao TMs Rene Lizada (of Sun.Star Davao's Papa's Table column) and Elaine Aviola (former chief of staff of Mayor Rody Duterte) won international awards. Other Dabawenyos who won top awards in national competitions include Deling Royo and Yoyo Sisi.
Members are not only good in speaking, they are also experts in evaluating speeches and speakers, because they do that to each other every meeting. While a
member is speaking on an assigned topic, whether prepared or impromptu, other members listen intently and grade the speaker. There's no way for a member but to improve. That's why there are also special trainings and seminars for evaluating and judging. One such seminar took place in Davao City, specifically at the Samulco Bldg. along Monterverde St., last month.
No less than District 75 Governor Michael Angelo Chua, Past District Governor Othello Enoveso and Lt. Governor for Education and Training Elisa Tay were present to conduct the officers training and judging seminar.
We share some of the photos taken not only of the seminar but also of other activities of TMI clubs in Davao. (AMA)
