5 net cafes slapped with 5-day closure, P1T fine

FIVE Internet cafes have been fined with a five-day closure and P1,000 each after students were caught playing computer games inside their respective establishments during class hours, said Business Bureau chief Erwin Alparaque.

"The Task Force on Public Safety is very strict in conducting inspections of Internet cafes even at night to see to it that they are following the executive order issued by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte or face penalties," Alparaque said.

Although he did not mention the names of the Internet cafes, Alparaque said one of the five cafes is located inside a mall, three are located on Ma-a road and one is on Legaspi St.

Alparaque said based on the executive order (EO), unwarranted refusal on the part of the operator or owner of the establishment shall constitute a prima facie evidence or proof of violation of the conditions upon which the business license or permit was issued and consequently justify the suspension or revocation of the business license or permit as may be warranted or necessary.

The EO further states those responsible for the violation of the law will also be charged criminally as the circumstances warrant.

Alparaque said there are 220 Internet cafes registered with the bureau.

"A fine of P1,000 and five days closure will be meted for the first offense, second offense will be a closure of two weeks and on the third offense, the business license of the establishment will be confiscated and that would mean permanent closure," Alparaque said. (RCB)
