Rapid chess opens Feb. 26

ONLY 100 entries will be accommodated in the 2005 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Rapid Open Chess Tournament on February 26 and 27 at the Sangguniang Kabataan Bldg., beside Almendras Gym.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director and tournament manager Ronnie Tabudlong said the event his is a first-come, first-served basis.

"Since the tournament is free registration, only the first 100 registrants can play considering the limited equipment could not accommodated more," Tabudlong said.

Tabudlong, who guested in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said registration is ongoing at the Sports Development Division, Rm. 10 City Hall, through Wilson or Aleli at contact number (082) 227-8074.

"The deadline of submission of entries is on February 25. We encourage players to bring their chess sets," Tabudlong said.

The seven-round Swiss System chessfest features the open, under-16 and below and kiddies categories.

The open event is the basis of the region's selection for top 10 qualifiers to the second phase of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games qualifying in Manila.

But they will have to go there at their own expense," Tabudlong said.

The under-16 and kiddies divisions, according to Tabudlong, will serve as selection for the National Age-Group championships set in May.

The city government of Davao will give away a total of P17,750 cash prize with the open champion receiving P5,000 and a trophy while the runner-up.

Cash prizes in under-16 are: P2,000 champion, P1,500 second, P1,000 third; kiddies--P1,500 champion, P1,000 second, P750 third. (MLS)
