Roadmap to boost production of cavendish banana okayed By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
THE roadmap, which aims to boost production and quality of cavendish bananas crafted by the Department of Agriculture (DA), has been approved recently by the cluster of six regions in Mindanao.
During a meeting conducted early this month in Ipil, Zamboanga, the cluster has agreed to start the implementation of measures as discussed in the roadmap to attain the targeted volume of production.
To date, the average production of cavendish banana per hectare in the region is pegged at 44.9 tons.
As per record of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) in 2003, Region 11 recorded a total of 34,072 hectares of cavendish banana plantation while the total production was pegged at 1.5 million metric tons.
The average production per hectare was at 44.23 tons.
Roman Armenio, Jr., senior agriculturist and high value commercial crop (HVCC) coordinator of the Department of Agriculture 11 (DA 11), said in an interview Tuesday there is a need to immediately adopt the roadmap because of the big potential of Mindanao's agricultural product in the world market.
In 2003, the cavendish banana constituted the bulk of the country's export earnings in all varieties of banana. The revenue was pegged at US$333 million, generated from 1,828,222.3 metric tons and distributed to 42 countries such as Japan and Middle East countries.
At present, the Philippines is on the second spot in the list of cavendish exporting countries and on number five in terms of production volume.
In the country, Region 11 is still the top cavendish-producing zone with Davao del Norte as top producer.
