Jobs Fiesta brings in job opportunities By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
COGNIZANT to the fact that the country's information technology (IT) is growing at a fast pace of 100 percent yearly, Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas III Tuesday cited the Jobs Fiesta as one strategy to boost the industry while bringing in job opportunities for Dabawenyos.
Roxas, chair of the Senate committees on trade and commerce and on economic affairs, said in an interview at the Davao City Trade and Convention Center (DavCon) Tuesday that the industry needs between 36,000 and 40,000 workers for this year alone.
"The IT industry clearly needs skilled workers, same is true with several companies that are in need of workers of the same qualifications," he said.
To date, there is a total of 60,000 people working for the industry.
"Tinatarget natin na lumagpas tayo sa 100,000 this year. At since dinala na rin natin ang mga CEOs (chief executive officers) dito sa Davao, malalaman nila na hindi magulo dito at makikilala rin nila ang mga paaralan (offering IT-related courses) na nandidito sa Davao," he said.
The only problem of the country's graduates in terms of grabbing the opportunity to become an IT representative, Roxas said, is the lack of English competency, an area that needs to be addressed.
During the event at the DavCon, graduating students and jobseekers submitted their resumes to prospective employers.
The Jobs Fiesta was participated by IT and IT-abled companies and organizations, most of which were from Manila and a few from the city.
Among the participants were People Support, Convergys, HSBC, JobsDB, Add Force, and Association of Solution Integrators in Davao (Asid).
The companies are looking for call center representatives and medical transcriptionists, also in business process outsourcing engagements, from the city.
