Stakeholders meet in Malaysia to tackle Bimp-Eaga roadmap
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza

TO FURTHER develop the economic status of the countries comprising the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (Bimp-Eaga), the Bimp-Eaga Business Council (BEBC) and Bimp Facilitation Center (Bimp FC) are organizing the 1st Meeting on the Formulation of the Bimp-Eaga Roadmap slated on March 21-22 at the Pacific Sutera, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

The meeting will be attended by various stakeholders in the development of Bimp-Eaga economic region.

The Mindanao delegation will be headed by Mindanao Business Council (MBC) chair Antonio Santos Sr. and the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco). To date, nothing is definite yet as to who will represent Medco in the event.

MBC consultant on Bimp-Eaga and small and medium enterprise (SME) development Peter Reger will also join the group.

The organizers' decision to come up with the meeting is anchored on the result of the 12th Senior Officials and 9th Ministers Meeting held on November 25-26, 2004 at Balikpapan, Indonesia.

The participants in the meeting agreed to develop a broad-based roadmap for Bimp-Eaga cooperation to chart the way forward in achieving the three broad goals of the organization, to wit: to increase trade, tourism, and investment.

The roadmap is expected to identify the broad targets of the Eaga-wide level as well as the specific targets of the four major industries-in-focus of the cooperation, to wit: transport; infrastructure and information and communications technology (ICT); natural resources; and tourism and SMEs.
