UPMin coed crowned Mutya ng Dabaw 2005
By Nelson C. Bagaforo and Jenny Molbog-Mendoza

SHE picked water as the most important resource the City of Davao has, citing it as one of the cleanest in the world. She went on appealing to Dabawenyos to conserve it, saying it is one of the reasons that make Davao City what is it today--a land of prosperity.

"We have to conserve our water. Kung kailangang gumamit ng tabo kung naliligo, gawin natin," said candidate number 5 Jovine Rowyna Narajos, who was crowned Mutya ng Dabaw 2005 during the search's grand finals and coronation night at CAP Auditorium Tuesday night.

Turning to two kids, who were among the children-hosts during the pageant, the University of the Philippines-Mindanao student aired this advise: "Kung nagsisipilyo, kailangan gumamit ng baso (so you won't waste water)." She was applauded.

And for that, she went home P70,000 richer and with a one-year job contract with the City Government, along with the four other finalists.

Narajos, a Communication Arts student also grabbed the Globe Texters' Choice Award, having garnered the highest number of text votes.

The 19-year-old stunner bested four other equally witty finalists, including crowd-favorite Kristeen Bala, a BS Accountancy junior at the University of Mindanao who was crowned Diwa ng Dabaw (1st Runner Up).

Bala won a cash prize of P60,000. She was also awarded as Miss Folded and Hung. Noreen Ly Paler, a Management Accounting student of the Ateneo de Davao University, who was also among the five finalists of the Hiyas sa Kadayawan last year, was crowned Sinag ng Dabaw (2nd runner up), winning a cash prize of P50,000. She also emerged the Best in Attires winner.

The Pag-asa ng Dabaw (3rd runner up) title, on the other hand, went to Ma. Elena Lopena, a Hotel and Restaurant Management student of the Philippine College of Technology, along with the P40,000 cash prize. She was also adjudged as Miss Photogenic and won the Sunniest Smile Award bestowed by the Camera Club of Davao.

Sofia Diaz of San Pedro College was chosen as the Patnubay ng Dabaw (4th runner up). She went home with P30,000.

The five finalists were all awarded with gift certificates from Allan Alforque Salon and sporting goods worth P50,000 each from Rudy Project, the official sports wear of the finalists.

Narajos is determined to implement a program that would boost further the city's tourism industry, the fact that they, along with four other finalists, will be given job contracts by the City Government to promote the city.

"Napakaganda naman kasi talaga ng Davao. Super-duper inis nga talaga ako sa advertisement ng Smart kasi hindi nasali ang Davao considering the fact na napakaraming magagandang lugar dito sa atin," the newly-crowned beauty said shortly after the pageant.

The panel of judges during the finals night included NBI chief Reynaldo Wycoco, Norma Ribo of Globe Telecommunications, Nicanor Gabunada, Jr., Councilor Diosdado Angelo Mahipus, Ma. Melissa Zuluaga of ABS-CBN Davao, and Boschi of Rudy Project.
