Malang exhibit at Royal Mandaya Hotel By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
ONE of the country's renowned artists, Mauro "Malang" Santos, and his colleagues from the Saturday Group are presently showing a total of 49 art pieces at the hallway of the Royal Mandaya Hotel until March 31.
The show dubbed as "The Saturday Group Art Exhibit, Impressions of Davao II" features the beauty of the city, such as its fruits and dances that are uniquely Davao, in each of the obra maestra of the group's members.
"We feel that Davao is almost a home to us. We love the beach, the durian fruit, we love everything about Davao, especially the people whom we meet here. And it is also another venue for us to show talents," said Migs Villanueva, a member of the Saturday Group.
The pool of artists was called Saturday Group since they meet every Saturday as most have regular jobs on weekdays. The group was formed in 1968 with Malang as one of the original members. The group is currently offering free art workshops to students who would like to explore their talents in painting.
"We are conducting art workshops for us to share our talents. We have also been very active in art workshops but as well as helping social organizations," Francisco Cena, the Father of Philippine Art Exhibit said.
In fact, part of the proceeds of the group's art exhibit in the city would be for the students of Diego Silang Elementary School, a public school near Seagull Beach Resort in Matina Aplaya.
Among the other members of the Saturday Group are Roel Obemio, Cris Cruz, Buds Convocar, Caña, Bing Siochi, Nik Masangcay, Roland Santos, Ben Infante, Gerrico Blanco, Alpha Labracas, Merci Melchor, Anna de Leon, Sheila Tiangco, Remy Boquiren, and Lydia Velasco.
