Militant group gets plum in Parada Dabawenyo

IT WAS Davao City at its diverse best as the militant Bayan Muna Partylist won best contingent in Wednesday's "Parada Dabawenyo", the highlight of the weeklong 68th Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

After the entry of the group was acknowledged, Partylist Representative Joel Virador handed a plant whose leaves were lined with a list of people's issues to Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Among the "people's issues" attached to the leaves of the plant are the opposition to the value added tax, consecutive price hikes, the Anti-terror Bill and the conduct of Balikatan Exercises.

Councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad, a Bayan Muna member, said the group will continue to struggle for peace with less militarization.

Trinidad said the clenched fist manifested by the Bayan Muna members during the parade symbolizes the continuing fight for a society that the people will be comfortable with.

Duterte acknowledged the group saying, "everyone is welcome to join the parade." He stood up as the contingent passed by the Rizal Park stage, the only contingent that got such acknowledgement.

"All walks of life are welcome. Even the MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front), the MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front), Abu Sayaff group and other extremists, we would welcome them in the city," Duterte said.

The mayor expressed gratification of the successful turnout of the celebration despite the continuing threats in the city's peace and order situation.

"Davao City will continue to flourish," Duterte positvely stated.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian School of Davao won second in the best contingent category while Sto. Niño Palaboy de Davao Inc. ranked third.

A total of 138 contingents from various schools, tribes and government units participated in the parade.

First prize received P25,000 cash, the second received P20,000 and the third received P15,000.

For the Best Float competition, the Maranao tribe won first with P60,000 cash prize. Second was the Club Vee Davao with P40,000 cash prize followed by the Kalagan tribe with P30,000.

Consolation prizes of P10,000 each were given to the Maguindanao tribe and the Davao Dental Society Inc. (AAG)
