City tour By Jinggoy Salvador
IT'S the celebration of the Araw ng Dabaw. It's the 68th year of this great city, large in area and pregnant with possibilities.
The city and its citizens have endured it all but like any other Pinoys we have faced and overcome adversities with a smile. We have gotten stronger through the years.
Around the city, everyone took part in making this celebration a grand one. A weeklong festivity kicked off the weekend prior to the big day with satellite parties around the city bars.
Freedom Park became one big fastfood area with entertainment, the best bands from all over the country beat their drums and belted out tunes in the clubs and in the malls, the green-thumbed flocked at PTA to check out a possible flora new breed, fruits in season are in the fruit stands, the hotels got ready to accommodate throngs of visitors.
It then led to the coronation of the new Mutya ng Dabaw, Jovine Narajos. This UP student will now do her duties to promote Davao tourism, although everyone is welcome to help in doing so.
The traditional parade took place on a very hot morning (summer is officially here folks!).
As much as I would have loved to join my friends, I opted to catch the parade on TV in the comforts of a cooler environment.
Parties, parties and more parties. Globe is the city's major supporter of this event and image model Boy2 alias July was hopping from one gig to another with the speed of the The Flash that I wasn't able to catch up with him. No pic this time.
Raise your glasses for a toast! Amidst the frenzied partying, art was celebrated as well.
Davao artist Vic Secuya exhibited his African collection at the Marco Polo.
The Saturday Group's works, which includes Malang, was at the Royal Mandaya.
Another toast! Marco Polo's GM of two and a half years Peter Chiu bids Davao farewell and Stanley Lao, from Marco Polo Gateway-HongKong, is taking over the reins of this premier hotel.
And across the bay, fantastic Basque chef Mikel Arriet is back for a ten-day visit at the Pearl Farm Beach Resort.
I got to taste his extraordinary cuisine again and I must say, it was an incredible gastronomic trip!
Get to visit the resort and treat your taste buds with his fare.
The biggest name in music flew over and the fans packed their venues. Bamboo screamed "Pinoy Ako" that drew shrieks and cheers from the maddening crowd at the concert hall of Venue.
In attendance this show broke the record high set by Fresstyle a couple of years back. I heard it was three thousand. Arriving late, I didn't dare go in, I won't make it all the way to the stage.
At the compound of the same sight, prior to U-Turn serenading the dining patrons that lead to a huge party, it was the sight of the biggest hip-hop aficionado gathering as Halo was relaunched.
Of course, my favorite spot would still be Bar 1 when my kind of music is played, my vodka and the greatest temptation, the ultra-wicked crispy tenga.
The city parks showcased live entertainment as well and streets were closed to traffic for the evening's grand dancing. Rizal and Legaspi streets where flooded with hot bodies dancing. Humidity and heat never became a problem.
It was easy to lose yourself in this kind of celebration, literally and figuratively. Elation took over me; it was great to see every Dabawenyo taking part in this fiesta but I lost my friends in the crowd, too much partying!
I can't wait for the Kadayawan festivity. If this was wild, expect the August fiesta to be wilder!
Of apples and lemons.
Cholesterol-free eggs. It's Easter, the good Lord rises and the Easter Bunny scatters the eggs for the children to search for, of course there is a corresponding prize.
From the mountaintop, Eden, to the sea, Pearl Farm Beach Resort, and everything in between, the city hotels and restaurants, celebrate Easter.
It guaranteed cholesterol-free and fun! Now, I need a couple of eggs....where do I look for them? Apples for all of you!!!
Apple for an apple. Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.
In this case I shall award an apple for every apply-raising muffin baked by the Gourmet Bread (where I buy my multi-grain whole wheat loaf).
It's at the 2nd floor of the SM, a stall by the Atrium. Fabulous muffin, everyone should try it. One muffin can be very filling but don't let me stop you from hoarding. It's P 18 each and worth every centavo.
