Interior secretary to police: eradicate corruption

INTERIOR and Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes has ordered all regional and provincial police directors nationwide to "eradicate corruption within their ranks."

Interviewed over Radyo ng Bayan, Reyes said he has ordered all Philippine National Police (PNP) heads nationwide to put a stop to extortion activities perpetrated by police scalawags.

President Gloria Arroyo, he said has been serious in her campaign to eliminate graft and corruption adding that "it is our duty to fully support the President's campaign against graft and corruption" and continuously cleanse the ranks of the police force of unruly and corrupt policemen.

He, however, said the government's fight against corruption requires the increased participation of the local government units (LGUs), local law enforcement and the community itself.

"As DILG Secretary and chairman of the National Police Commission (Napolcom), our all efforts is an "all-out campaign against crime and to successfully wage this, the PNP needs to win the public trust and get the job done," he said.

Reyes said President Arroyo's 10-point legacy agenda is now in full-swing and the PNP's contribution towards achieving this can be made by making the community feel secured in their homes and on the streets.

"Once our citizen has given that sense of security, "you encourage them to be active economically and you help attract investors to create jobs and attract tourists to our country," he said. (PIA/Rpalacio)
