Quarrying makes favorable revenue
TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- Quarrying industry in Davao del Norte posted favorable performance last year owing to the cooperation of its players who had also shown consciousness in their social responsibility.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources-Local Government Unit (Penro-LGU) Chief Engineer Bernardo S. Rabaca in a media forum held recently said revenue generated from sand and gravel and other quarry resources last year reached P5.5 million.
The figure was 2 percent higher than the 2003 collection of P5.4 million and 10.85 percent more than the targeted P5 million collection last year.
Rabaca gave credit to the Provincial Mining Regulatory Board (PMRB) chaired by Maria Luisa Jacinto of the Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau (MGB) and co-chaired by Governor Gelacio Gementiza.
Overseeing the quarrying operation in the province, PMRB last year conducted 11 regular meetings, passed 10 resolutions, conducted investigation/verification on 68 sand and gravel /quarry commercial permit applicants.
It also processed 68 applications for extraction permit of sand, gravel and other quarry resources and recommended the same for approval to the Provincial Governor.
Last year, it released 55 sand, gravel and earth-fill commercial permits and three government gratuitous permits for a total of 58 extraction permits from which the provincial government drew P5.5 million gross revenue.
Through information dissemination, the board made it possible for sand and gravel and quarry operators to fully understood the standards and policies in quarrying.
PMRB made it also possible for the association of quarry permit holders in Davao del Norte through the North Davao Permittee and Quarry Association (NORDAPQUA) implement its Social Development Management Program (SDMP).
NORDAPQUA was organized as an active partner of the PENRO-LGU in implementing policies, programs and services relative to quarry and sand and gravel projects.
On its 3rd year of implementing its SMDP in 2004, NORDAPQUA had served livelihood projects particularly swine, goat, cow and kaber/sassoo dispersals, benefiting a total of 20 beneficiaries in 17 host communities/barangays.
NORDAPQUA has continued its livelihood seminars to further enhance backyard-raising knowledge of its beneficiaries.
It brought to a study tour a total of 114 farmers and community leaders at Mt. Carmel International Training Institute in Bansalan, Davao del Sur where they learned various agriculture technologies and advance knowledge and technology on goat-raising. (PIA/JMDA)
