Good luck, Manny! By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
MANNY Pacquiao, the devoted Catholic who is as close to his rosary as he is to his guitar, fights anew today in a bid to further cement his place as one of the world's greatest fighters.
Not only that, Pacquiao will be entering the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas against Erik Morales carrying on his shoulders a heavy load: the hope of 80 million of his countrymen for his victory.
"I feel happy, especially whenever I bring honor to my country," said General Santos City native Pacquiao, who is out to fulfill his dream of attaining boxing immortality against the wily and durable Morales in a 12-round super featherweight showdown.
Pacquiao tipped the scales at 129.5 pounds during the official weigh-in Saturday, while Morales came in at 130.
The 26-year-old Pacquiao wore his inseparable rosary during the activity. He takes it off only moments before the bell sounds ushering in the start of the bout.
Pacquiao also plays the guitar whenever he is not doing gym work. It takes his mind off serious business, such as fighting in the ring or raising a family. He has two kids and a very supportive wife, Jinkee.
Based on the latest betting line in Las Vegas, Pacquiao is now a 7-5 favorite to win the bout. But Morales could pose some problems for him.
The Mexican is a good two inches taller at 5'8, while Pacquiao is only 5'6. And with a longer reach.
In 49 fights, Morales has never been knocked out, compiling a record of 47 wins, two defeats with 34 knockouts.
Pacquiao has a record of 39-2-2 with 30 KOs. His last 13 wins were all via the short route.
