'Araw' fair exhibitors complain of low income By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
A NUMBER of exhibitors during the Davao Trade Fair held on March 5 to 20 at the PTA Grounds revealed their income for this year dwindled as compared to last year's staging of the same event, which was one of the highlights of the Araw ng Dabaw celebrations.
A total of 197 exhibitors from Davao City and another two from Kidapawan City joined the fair, an exhibition of various plants, both ornamental and flowering.
Of the 199 exhibitors, 143 were flower/garden shops while the remaining 32 and 17 were engaged into selling dry goods and food, respectively.
Janice Piamonte of Danica's Garden, which sells different variety of orchids, said in an interview Thursday that in last year's exhibition, they did not have even time to sit, saying the flow of buyers coming in was unstoppable.
With this year, she added, most of the people who approached their store just asked for prices or if they decided to buy, they only bought one or two orchid cuttings, which are offered at P120 to P300 each.
Piamonte said that they can hardly sell the grown orchids for these were priced P900 to P1,400 each.
Piamonte said that most sought-after products in the exhibit were euphorbia plants as these were sold at low prices, which ranged from P150 to P500 per pot.
This year's Davao Trade Exhibit was organized by the Floriculture Industry Council of Southern Mindanao (Ficsmin).
Under Ficsmin, there are three attached organizations, namely: Mindanao Floriculture and Ecological Development (Minfed), Floriculture Industry of Davao, Inc. (Fidi), and Orchid Society of Davao.
