GEM-assisted program provides computers to Mindanao schools
THE Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) 2 program under its Computer Literacy and Internet Connection (Clic) project has already helped a total of 134 schools throughout Western and Central Mindanao, as of February 28.
GEM 2, a program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAid), revealed in a press conference last week that 134 Clic projects have been able to assist 162,388 beneficiaries in these areas.
Under its Clic project, GEM 2 supports the efforts of the National Government and Department of Education (DepEd)-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) to expand computer literacy and information technology (IT) preparedness among students and teachers in the autonomous region and neighboring conflict-affected areas.
The program provides Internet-connected computers and, if necessary, computer hardware to enable students and teachers to tap vast array of educational resources that can enrich their classroom experience.
To date, the Clic Program connects most of its schools to the Web via wireless broadband or if not through the satellite.
The program spends around $5,000 to $6,000 per school, depending on the number of computers provided and the type of connection used.
John Dalton, GEM 2 project director, said the focus of Clic and Ease (Education Awareness Support Effort), also an education project, next year will be in Sulu so that more conflict-affected areas will benefit from this effort.
"We always make sure that an equal distribution of projects will be delivered among our beneficiaries," he said. (JMM)
