Davao lass graduates magna cum laude in ADMU

IN TIME for the celebration of the 68th Araw ng Dabaw, a Dabawenya brings pride to Davao City in her own little way as she will graduate magna cum laude at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Amanda Marie F. Nograles, daughter of lawyers George and Sol Nograles, graduated from the Ateneo with a degree in A.B. Management Economics last March 19.

Amanda, 21 years old, is a product of St. Paul's College Pasig where she had been a consistent honor student all throughout her elementary and secondary years.

In 2000, she graduated from high school at the top (Top One) of her batch, and romped away with seventeen gold and silver medals. Amanda repeated this feat in college at the Ateneo de Manila where she was a dean's lister all the way, and earned a perfect average of 100% (QPI of 4.0) during her last semester.

A niece of Davao City 1st district representative Prospero C. Nograles, Amanda is considering a career in law, and is not closing her door to a position in government later, just like her favorite uncle.

"But for now, I would like to relax for a while. I hear there are a lot of bargains at Mango in Rockwell," she said.

Tall (5'7") and slim, Amanda goes to the gym every day and feels uneasy whenever she misses her cosmic cycling class.

She also attends yoga and Pilates classes. She reveals that they are her stress busters."My day is not complete without exercise," Amanda said.

In between school and gym, Amanda goes regularly to Welfareville in Mandaluyong City where she helps a small community of handicapped and disabled children.

"In my small way, I try to make them feel special and useful.Right now, I am helping them sell to National Book Store notebooks containing their artwork and drawings on the cover."

But what takes most of her time right now is her undergarments business under the trademark "Naughty Undies" which started as a project in her Management class.

"When an article about my business, entitled Amanda's Secret appeared in Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI, March 2, 2005), I received a lot of orders from all over, even as far as from Cagayan de Oro," Amanda revealed. "They liked the undies' funky and sexy design. This will surely keep my hands full for a while," she said.

Though she practically grew up in Metro Manila, Amanda makes it a point to regularly visit Davao and get in touch with her roots here. "No matter what, I still consider myself a Dabawenya. I love Davao and I would consider living in Davao someday and use my training and education to help make it an even more beautiful place," Amanda said.

And her message to other young Dabawenyos out there: "My parents have taught me early on about the value of good education. Unlike wealth and fame, which are fleeting, a good education is the key to a fulfilling life. That is why I have never stopped learning since then."
