Davao Oriental town yields new gold site

DAVAO Oriental Governor Ma. Elena Palma Gil on Thursday said a new gold site reported to be in the town of Manay, Davao Oriental is expected to boost the province's economy as it could add to the province's resources.

But she was quick to add that the place needs to be checked first by concerned agencies before a permit will be issued for mining operations.

"A team from the Task Force Kalinawan with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will visit Taocanga, Kalinawan in Manay on Monday (today) to assess the area and they will submit their reports, recommendations and assessments to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region 11," Palma Gil said.

The governor said they will make the next move only after they receive the reports and recommendations of the team who will assess the gold mine site.

"There are about 5,000 to 6,000 small scale miners who are reportedly operating in the area. Reports have it that the gold yield in Kalinawan is of high grade,"
Palma Gil said.

The governor said that the Kalinawan Task Force is expected to submit their reports to the MGB tomorrow.

"First step pa lang ta, this is the assessment of the area. We will base the next move to the results of the assessment," Palma Gil said.

She also said that if a mining permit will be issued, mining operations will be managed by cooperatives and should be done only in areas where mining will be allowed following the policies of environment safety and protection. (RCB)
