Mayor: Strict security measures apply to all
By Aurea A. Gerundio

* Muslims told not to worry about strict inspections as measures are put in place against terrorists and not against Muslims

THE Muslims in Davao City have nothing to worry about the plan to implement stringent inspections, as the process will be fair to all regardless of religion.

Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte gave the assurance Friday as worries developed that police and military authorities might be careless in their security efforts by indiscriminately assaulting any Muslim groups.

"The members of the MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front) and Muslims in Davao City are even far better than the Christians. Wala akong problema sa kanila (I don't have a problem with them)," Duterte said.

Duterte said religion should not become an issue in relation to several insurgencies happening in the country.

"It's an insurgency being perpetrated by extremists, not an issue of being a Muslim," Duterte said.

Earlier, Ulama League of the Philippines (ULP) 11 chairman Aleem Mahmod Adilao said the death of 23 Muslim inmates, including 3 leaders of the Abu Sayyaf group, in the siege of Camp Bagong Diwa jail Tuesday has not really affected the Muslim people in Davao City.

Adilao expressed confidence that the Muslims in the city will not get involved in the alleged retaliatory attack by the Abu Sayyaf.

Councilor Amilbangsa T. Manding, representing the Maranao tribe in the city, supported Adilao's statement saying Islam followers here still give their 100 percent support to the City Government.

Manding likewise appealed to all Muslims not the put the law into their hands to give justice to those who were killed in the Bicutan jail incident.
