El Niño to affect fishponds in R-11 By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) 11 warned the public that the region's fishponds and its production will be affected with the upcoming El Niño phenomenon.
Bfar 11 regional director George Campeon, in an interview, said the long period of dry season, which is anticipated to last for eight months, will most likely affect the water level of fishponds in the region and will even cause them to dry up.
Considering this scenario, Campeon said, the agency is preparing and looking for possible measures to take in order to address the impending situation.
"Wala pa naman talagang advise kung meron ngang El Niño. Until now, inuulan pa rin naman tayo. But, we have to prepare as early as now. Just like DA (Department of Agriculture), we also need engine-driven water pumps for the region's fishpond operators," he said.
Campeon added that they are currently processing their request for engine-driven water pumps from the head office of DA since Bfar is part of the said agency.
The water pumps will be used to get water supply from the rivers down to the fishponds. Through this mechanism, Campeon said, the fishponds will be saved from drying up.
Campeon is scheduled to meet with the provincial fishery operators of the region right after the Holy Week to discuss with them the possible effects of El
Niño.
Campeon, however, said although the fishponds will be affected, people have nothing to worry about the supply of fish because region 12 will provide Davao region with their daily fish requirements.
