Gulf festival slated April 23-30
TO DEVELOP Davao Region as an "island to highland destination," the Department of Tourism (DOT) 11 will be hosting the Dive the Gulf 2005 Festival from April 23 to 30.
Davao Gulf, being one of the country's premier dive destinations, is expected to be teeming with divers during the eight-day event.
DOT 11 Director Sonia Garcia said in press conference Friday that the event is aimed at promoting the area as a tourist destination while preserving the environment, as a clean-up drive will also be conducted.
"The Philippines is already considered as one of the premier dive destinations in the world. And we want the region to be part of the country's dive map. That's why we are launching this event," she said.
Garcia said aside from the mountains and waterfalls that abound in the region, DOT 11 is also promoting its rich marine resources and aquamarine destinations.
Another major activity during the festival is the 12-hour Scavenger Hunt wherein contestants will be asked to recover hidden items. The contestant with the most number of recovered items wins.
The Scavanger Hunt will starts at the Waterfront Resort in the city and end at the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos). This event will cap the Dive Fiesta on April 30.
Garcia is optimistic that this new festival will boost Region 11's tourism climate.
