Antonio dismantles Torre
TOURNAMENT favorite Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. defeated second GM Eugene Torre after 44 moves of a Bishop Opening to share the lead with four others after the seventh round of Filway/Timelife Chess Championship Mindanao leg Sunday at the Entertainment Area in SM City-Davao, Davao City.
With the win, Antonio now has 6.0 points, the same output of IM Idelfonso Datu, NM Elmer Sumngat, NM Rolando Nolte and local bet NM Cedric Magno.
In othe matches, Datu beat Henry Lopez; Sumngat took the scalped of IM Barlo Nadera; Nolte nipped NM Fernandito Pialan; and Magno humble FM Oliver Dimakiling.
The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) sanctioned tournament is sponsored by Filway Marketing CEO/President Hector Tagaysay where the Open division champion gets the lion share of P30,000.
Meanwhile, third seed and country's top player GM candidate Mark Paragua outplayed Harudin Tayuan to led the group of 5.5 pointers along with Reynaldo Quinonez and NM Rustom Tolentino.
Quinonez upset US Master Pedro Tidoy while Tolentino crushed NM Alexander Lupian.
In the distaff side, Mallorca Olympiad veteran Loreshyl Cuizon remains on top with 5.5 points in sixth games of play.
She draw her sixth round match against Rowela Acedo. Acedo now has 4.5 points.
